About event

The saga novel “The Last” tells about the fate of a German family from St. Petersburg, who found themselves in the thick of the dramatic events of the 20th century. Based on real events, the novel spans almost a century and connects such different points on the map of Europe as St. Petersburg, the Northern Urals, Düsseldorf and Paris.

The story centers on a family divided by the 1917 Revolution. One of the brothers ended up in exile in the West, the others were scattered into fragments throughout the Soviet Union. The first meeting of the two brothers decades later took place only in 1978 - and ended in tragedy. And in 2000, the story took another turn: their children met. But the attempt to comprehend the past, to speak out what had been hushed up for a long time, turned out to be painful and unanswered.

Lyubov Sokolova shows how political disasters become family traumas, and silence becomes a time bomb passed on from generation to generation. The novel raises pressing issues of guilt, memory and historical responsibility - especially relevant in our time.

The author gives the characters not only documentary authenticity, but also the living voice of the era. The book makes extensive use of folklore, legends and anecdotes, which, under censorship, were the most important form of collective memory and reaction to injustice.

This phrase sounds like an epigraph to the entire book.
“The Last” is not just a family chronicle. This is the voice of the era, told from the inside, without embellishment and illusions. This is a literary bridge between past and present, memory and future.
