About event

Bedřich Smetana and the librettist Karel Sabina masterfully laughed at everyone who imagined the "national opera" as an idyllic picture from the Czech countryside, where only national virtues reign. The Bartered Bride is much more a humorous opera than a "national" opera. But her humor is exactly the kind that Czechs love so much, and so Smetana's opera, full of irony, biting, sometimes even cynical wit, but also tenderness and simple joy of life, eventually became a national opera in the best sense of the word. .. "Prodanka" has been staged at the National Theater in many forms and has never left its permanent repertoire.

Already the twenty-first the production was created by film and theater director Alice Nellis. Performed by Alice Nellis, The Bartered Bride is not only making fun of ancient Czech villagers, but also of those who for generations have been trying to find the key to staging this Czech opera of operas - the opera creators themselves . And so in the new The Bartered Bride, not only the story of Mařenka, Jeník, Vašek and Kecal is told, but also about "how opera is made" - that is, how it is gradually rehearsed and acquires its theatrical form, how the director tries to make the opera "modern" and the others don't care what can happen during the rehearsals and how "Soldanka" finally finds her right one form.

The opera has two 20-minute intermissions.
