About event

The uncertain path of the Sámi

Sámi artist Britta Marakatt-Labba has been dedicated to textile art for many years. He weaves into his creations the mythology of his people, the original population of the far North, who call themselves the Sami. In her work, Britta Marakatt-Labba portrays the Sámi's relationship with nature as well as the political struggle for the right to self-determination. Now he has the last challenge before him: the Sami community, still largely dependent on reindeer herding, finds itself in danger due to the global climate crisis...

We invite you to a Swedish documentary film as part of the Days of the North 2024 festival

HISTORJÁ – STEHY SÁMŮ (Historjá – Stygn för Sápmi, Sweden, 2022, 87 min)

Screenplay and direction: Thomas Jackson
Music: Eirik Havnes
Performance : Britta Marakatt-Labba, Jon-Isak Labba

The film Historjá, named after Britta's tapestry with motifs from Sámi history, is a poetic portrait of the artist, the remote regions of Lapland and the Sámi nation.

The film History - Stitches of the Sami is his most successful film to date - it was warmly received not only at international film festivals in Toronto and New York, but also at home, when it won two Guldbagge film awards, in the categories Best Documentary Film and Best Music .

The screening will be preceded by a short introduction about Sámi culture.

In the original version with Czech subtitles.
