🗣️LECTURE: AGAINST THE CURRENT: INDEPENDENT FILM IN THE USA 🇺🇸
Outside the Hollywood dream factory, the last two decades of the millennium in the United States literally burst open with independent filmmakers who transcend genre and stylistic conventions and make films against the current of blockbuster trends. American film takes many forms: from surreal journeys into the subconscious under the baton of David Lynch and dramatized stories by Jim Jarmusch, through chamber films by Richard Linklater or Gus van Sant and penetrations into the life of the African-American community directed by Spike Lee, to genre remixes by the Coen brothers and Quentin Tarantino.
🎥 The lecture will be followed by a screening of Stranger Than Paradise (Jim Jarmusch, 1984).
Jim Jarmusch made his second film with leftover 16mm film stock left over by Wim Wenders after his State of Affairs. After the success of the short version at festivals, he reworked it into a full-length format in three chapters in only 67 shots without camera movement or conventional film punctuation. The protagonists of this empty narrative are three young people who swim through life without great goals. Harsh black-and-white aesthetics, static shots, dry humor and melancholic poetry of the everyday gave birth to a new voice of American independent cinema.
