About event
This year's Velvet Enlightenment parade will connect the Prague and Basel traditions!!!
For the thirteenth time, the satirical Velvet Enlightenment carnival parade will take place in Prague on November 17, bringing current social issues in an allegorical form. This year, it will be attended by 150 people from Basel in traditional costumes, accompanied by piccolos and drums.
Parade route:
15.30 Kampa park – opening parade
16.15 Charles Bridge towards Betlémské náměstí
18.15 Národní tří from the National Theater
18.45 Fruit market – final parade
The event takes place under the auspices of the mayor of the capital city of Prague.
The motto of the year is: Say it with a mask!
During the November holiday weekend, the Fórum_um Initiative in collaboration with the Hybernská Campus and Charles University is also preparing an exhibition called Beneath the Mask about the phenomenon of the Basel mask and an international symposium on public festivities.
We cordially invite you to the opening of the Beneath the Mask exhibition, which will take place on Friday, November 15 from 5:00 p.m. at the Hybernská Campus. Basel masks will be available to see and try on, with which you will see footage from the Swiss carnival revelry.
On Saturday 16/11, we invite you to the 3rd Symposium on public festivities, where personalities from major foreign city festivities, such as Basel's Fasnacht or Brussels' Zinneke Parade, will speak. They will discuss the irreplaceable role of similar festivities in the development of community life in various European cities.
On the eve of the main parade, a wild Charivari will take place in the streets of the Old Town, as we call the unofficial walking through the city in masks and with musicians.
The main event of the celebrations on November 17 will of course be the Velvet Illumination parade, which will involve students from Czech and German high schools, non-profit organizations, students of FF UK and DAMU as well as four traditional Basel cliques of musicians (Alit Steilemmer, Dejavue, Spezi, Grand Wazoo) supplemented by the Brussels drumming group DROM and Jiří Starý's Schlauchband from Prague. The procession will pass from Kampa, across Charles Bridge, Smetana nábřeží and Národní tříd to Můstek.
“In 2011, I visited Fasnacht for the first time. It was pure fascination – at four o'clock in the morning the lights go out in the city center and tens of thousands of masks start moving accompanied by piccolos and drums. There is such a breathtaking celebration in the middle of Europe, in which a huge number of Baselites of all ages and walks of life participate. Fasnacht is a geyser of creativity, a reflection of current events and an inner meditation in walking in masks. I got in touch with friends and colleagues from the university - we must have something like this in our country, we wished. And so, in 2012, the Velvet Enlightenment was born," says Olga Cieslarová, the founder of the Prague parade.
