About event

Psychedelic cinema is a new concept of the Czech Psychedelic Society, where visitors can look forward to regular screenings of films with a psychedelic theme and follow-up discussions with experts from various circles. known for its discovery, research and production of LSD and other psychedelics. Albert Hofmann himself also worked in the Sandoz laboratories, where he synthesized the first LSD. At the time, the company made films that reflect this production and offer a fascinating insight into psychedelic history.

This event is the second part of the Sandoz screenings, the first part taking place two months earlier, on September 11 at the Summer Cinema Gabriel Loci.

After the screening, there will be a discussion with researcher, filmmaker and dramaturg of the One World festival, Lea Petříková, and psychologist Marko Nikolic.

Two films are in English with Czech subtitles and the other two are in French with Czech subtitles. The discussion will be in Czech.

>>>>>>>> Screened images:

>> Perception and Imaginative Experience (dir. Éric Duvivier, 1965, France, 27 min) - EN dub., CZ tit. <<

Psychedelic Sandoz in the true sense of the word. The documentary film Perception and Imaginative Experience discusses the complex topic of perception from the point of view of neurophysiology and
psychology. The film captures a series of perceptual experiments under different conditions - for example, sensory deprivation, exposure to the flicker effect, as well as psychedelic intoxication. The states that
the test subjects experience are visualized in the film in psychedelic visual sequences.

>> Acid (dir. Art Ciocco, 1971, USA, 25 min) - EN dub., CZ tit. <<

The documentary film Acid directly addresses the phenomenon of LSD, summarizes the current situation and points to still relevant questions regarding the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. The film also describes the fundamental change in the social attitude towards the psychedelic topic, which occurred as a result of the controversies and negative campaign in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainly in terms of the approach of power structures, including the Sandoz company itself, which, since the production of LSD in the second she distanced herself in the middle of the 1960s. Even though Acid acts to a large extent ideologically, today it brings rare statements of researchers (among them e.g. Stanislav Grof) and dynamic shots describing the period's perception of psychedelic culture.

>> Ballet sur un thème paraphrénique (1962, 33 min) - EN dub., CZ tit. <<

The film represents the "factual" area of the Sandoz portfolio, that is, films that work with opulent extravagant scenography and a vague, even crazy narrative, which, however, is often based on exact themes such as the results of specific scientific research or studies of psychological diseases. This is also the case with Ballet - the director Éric Duvivier, who was behind most of the films in the mentioned category, tried in the film for an audiovisual expression of the state of "paraphrenia", i.e. a type of schizophrenia manifested by the overlapping of reality and schizophrenic hallucinations.

< br/>
>> Autoportrait d'un schizophrène (26 min, 1978) - FR dub., CZ tit. <<

The film deals with the topic of schizophrenia and its manifestations in the life of an individual, which charts through the patient's actual journal entries, provided to the film's director by collaborating physician D.J. Duchém, who, among other things, in the 60s of the 20th century was involved in research into the therapeutic effects of psychedelics in psychiatry. In the film, there is a stream of emotional statements describing the transformation of the schizophrenic's personality, in the pictures we follow the protagonist as he gradually transforms and falls into the disease. The film provides an impressive reflection on the complex subject of mental illness. Also interesting is the casting of the charismatic actor Pierre Clémenti, known from the films of Luis Buňuel or P.P. Pasolini.

Marek Nikolič

After graduating with a single-field Master of Arts in Psychology at the University of Aberdeen and a two-year training in Person-Centered Psychotherapy, he went to observe shamanistic practices in South and Central America for two years. Upon his return, he completed an MSc in Clinical Health Psychology, focusing on anxiety, chronic pain, and autism. Scientifically, he dealt with the psychology of safety, or the psychological factors of a space in which people are better treated, learn, and divide; and related somatic patterns. This focus led him to study statistics as a way of discovering patterns in medical data, and to a Ph.D in Neurosciences at the Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, and the Psychedelic Research Center at the National Institute of Mental Health, where today he is engaged in the search for predictors of the antidepressant help of psychedelics in neuroimaging data.
