“Ballroom’s International Alliances” invites you to a space for exchange and knowledge sharing beyond the European Context of Ballroom. With this Format, we aim to center the global majority within our community and raise more awareness about lived realities beyond the global North.
In this Multimedia Performance Lecture, we invited Ballroom Communities from Tunisia, Mexico, and Colombia to share their local experience of Ballroom. Each community will create a Video format for this specific sharing, including interviews and archive footage.
This session focuses on place-specific needs, historical and current particularities, orientations, and references, while also discussing the challenges the community faces and the dreams they hope to achieve.
We are happy to welcome in Person with us at HKW Plumass, Amin St. Laurent, Alaïa and Dialba St Laurent Miu Miu, who have supported the creation of the Video formats for this specific sharing, including interviews and archive footage.

La Mesa Afro de Cali was born in 2023 as a response to the need to denounce the racist acts that began to emerge within the kiki ballroom scene in Cali, Colombia. Since then, we have taken a stance of support, leadership, and celebration for the Black people who are part of this community. La Mesa is formed by black members from different houses in Cali, such as the Kiki House of Fire Fénix and the Ubuntu Kiki House of Brown as well as 007 sisters. Here, we leave aside the individualism of the houses to come together as one collective.
We act as a group bringing Ballroom to the racialized peripheries of the city, organizing educational spaces and workshops not only about the different ballroom categories, but also about racism, transphobia, misogyny, and other forms of oppression that affect us all. Through this, we seek to educate ourselves, learn, and build a better scene, one that ultimately comes together in the kikis we organize that uplift the beauty of black and trans people who has been historically erased in our city and country.
For us, ballroom is a bridge to remember and honor our afrolatino transcestrality; a way to speak our truth as black, trans, queer, barrial mariquitas.

The House of Alaïa was founded by OA Godmother Kennïe Alaïa on August 22, 2022, rising alongside the birth of the Tunisian ballroom scene. In no time, House of Alaïa became a leading force in TN ballroom. With the guidance of Pioneers Yannï & Kennïe Alaïa, almost every Alaïan child stepped up to share their knowledge, mentor new talents, and elevate the scene through workshops, balls, performances, and by parenting the new generation.
Fast forward a year, and we expanded beyond Tunisia. In just 2 months, Prïnce Mylïe & OA Godmother Kennïe were walking and snatching trophies all over Europe: France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, all the way to Turkey. Meanwhile, Father Yannï & Kassa Alaïa ventured into the Italian and Indonesian scenes, representing our family globally. Which made the House officially open its European Chapter in October 2024. Led by European Father Amïn and Legendary European Mother Soraya Alaïa, the House regroups children all over Europe: France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.
House of Alaïa is proud to position itself as the 1st international North African Kiki House, adding its Amazigh & Arab touch to the international scene. Ballroom was created by marginalized queer people, and as we expand into Europe, our mission is to prove that Arab & North African queers have every right to claim a seat at this table. We are here to show that our voices, our culture, & our resilience deserve to be seen & celebrated on the floor, representing our roots, our struggle, and our strength in a world where we are often erased or overlooked.
Despite the challenges of being queer in Tunisia, we’ve created and led an underground movement that continues to thrive, and now we’re bringing that same energy and resilience to Europe.
