About event

Queen of Disco, A Mighty Real Story - Winner Toneelwrijfprijs 2023 - is a music theater performance about the irresistible turnout, tragic downfall and unstoppable rebirth of "Disco Music", embodied by the life of disco icon and flamboyant Sylvester. Our world has changed forever.

Sylvester grew up in Watts, a black working -class neighborhood in Los Angeles. He was a prodigy, with his angel singing and his androgynous prevent a striking appearance in his mother's gospel choir. As a teenager he exchanged Watts for San Francisco where he joined a hippie drag-queen revue, The Cockettes. A few years later he broke through as a solo singer, worn by the disco flood wave that flooded the world. He was a pioneer, openly gay, proud and loud, with gigantic hits like you make me feel (mighty real) and do ya wanna funk. In the early 1980s he fell ill: AIDS. He was one of the very first celebrities that led to AIDS suffered and was as an activist at the forefront of the AIDS Awareness Movement. He died in 1988 from the effects of his illness.

Disco came up in the early 1970s from a semi-legal circuit of Gay Zwarte and Latino clubs and parties in New York and hit like a bomb. Together with emancipation, the LGBTQ community in America and became a global phenomenon. The whole world was on the dance floor, it was one big party. In the early 1980s there was a tough backlash. With the election of Ronald Reagan and the AIDS Pandemie, Disco disappeared underground again to conquer the world again years later as House Music.

Moving but at the same time completely over the top and especially blood topical. Queen of Disco is about identity, emancipation and activism. But it is also about the deadly impact of a worldwide pandemic, about the impact of the underground, and about how the dance floor has become an arena for innovation and cultural transformation since the rise of disco worldwide.

Marjorie Boston and Maarten van Hinte from Rightaboutnow inc., The creative team behind performances such as Tori (HNTJONG), Nina Simone (A) Live, and Status tell the insane story of the "Mighty Real" Sylvester, from Choreaf to Superster.
