Queer as Punk
Malaysia, Indonesia (2025), 88 min, English
director: Yihwen Chen
The documentary follows members of the Malaysian punk band “Shh...Diam!” over a period of almost 3 years, from 2018 to the Covid period. The band's name literally means "shut up!" A majority of the members of the band, which has existed since 2010, are queer, and so their songs deal with experiences of discrimination, counterculture movements and political protest. The film's central themes are self-realization, physical transformation, love, parental expectations, fear and political commitment.
