The locality of Bašta, Varta and Velínok, located above the village of Podtureň in Liptov, represents a system of headland-like outcrops of the Váža terrace that dominate the Váh valley and its wide area. These elevations are historically significant for their archaeological finds and traces of settlement dating back to prehistoric times and the Middle Ages. A small medieval castle with a tower once stood on the top of the Bašta hill, from which the name of the village Podtureň is derived.
During the construction of the highway in the 1970s, archaeological research was carried out in this location, which revealed an extensive complex of defensive fortifications from the 1st century. century BC.
These finds testify to the strategic importance of this area in the past.
More in person.
