Rabit
From grime tactics to the format of pure sonic inquisition, Texan Eric C. Burton has given more than enough proof of an inestimable value for much of the contemporary music that has come down to us. It is under Rabit's enigmatic mantle that his productions have attracted widespread admiration, including from the always attentive Bjork. Already close to a decade of editions, the admirable archive created by him never ceases to amaze; where others seek to find a safe space to develop a lexicon, Rabit prefers to avoid that space beforehand – instead roaming the surrounding area with an undying curiosity around nuance. Knowing that it is on the edges where he moves, it will not be surprising to see the infusions with other multimedia artists, in a clear sharing of a common vision in tampering with the natural state of things. Whether as a creator or as an editor (through his Halcyon Veil), Burton brings together brains, living flesh and a lot of nerve. In such a vast and bustling musical championship, with emerging names and unexpected returns, we are faced with an example of healthy militancy towards the art itself. After all, he makes ambiguity his greatest asset.

Using a sharp array of custom tools and generative music software, there are few who can extract such a vivid expression from electronics, almost with a life of its own. The debut of Communion has gained cult status over the past few years, incorporating some of the best material Tri Angle has offered during its long-gone existence. But beyond violence and tension, Rabit knew how to find these threshold areas, hidden and still raw, for fantastic artificial worlds like Les Fleurs du Mal or What Dreams May Come. Melodic instincts and emotional upheavals align with a signature digital surrealism. And contrary to what one might think, none of this is escapist; “The people running this country right now are truly the lowest level human beings – monsters… I wanted to do a work that had that level of decay”. The intention was expressed in an interview with the publication Dazed – and frankly it couldn't be more faithful. A mirror of the climate of upheaval and abyss that torments us, it also reminds us of the intense power of creativity. The dismantling of ideas to create our own and, above all, going against the current. Whatever it is. NA
