About event
Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody and Stravinsky's Firebird
The Netherlands Philharmonic, conducted by Aziz Shokhakimov, plays a Russian program with work by Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. They also accompany the young piano virtuoso Alexander Malofeev in Rachmaninoff's Paganini Variations.
Alexander Malofeev with Rachmaninoff's Paganini Variations
'A world revolution on the piano' wrote the press about the young Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev after a stunning performance in the Vienna Musikverein. He has now become a phenomenon who also made a deep impression in the Netherlands, including in the Concertgebouw. He is at the keys in Rachmaninov's impressive Paganini Variations. While Paganini's original was already devilishly difficult, Rachmaninov manages to create an unparalleled virtuoso fantasy that continues to fascinate from the first to the last note.
Stravinsky's impressive Firebird
Even more Russian music in this concert led by the Uzbek conductor Aziz Shokhakimov. He leads the Netherlands Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky's highly romantic vision of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. At least as theatrical, but in Stravinsky's bright colors, is the fairytale ballet The Firebird. From this first major success in his career, he composed several suites, including one in 1919. Insneeuwing, a completely new commissioned composition by Catharina Clement, completes this program in a Russian atmosphere.
