Maarten van Hinte, one of Rightaboutnow inc., says in this second RAN Inc. Lecture in the spirit of the music theater performance Queen of Disco in a inspired way about the rise, fall and unstoppable rebirth of disco music. The disco genre is often dismissed as empty and superficial. But that is anything but. It has deep roots in the history and culture of the African diaspora. From the black, Latinx and Queer margins of American society, Disco managed to conquer the world and change forever.
Disco came up in the early 1970s from a semi-legal circuit of Gay Black and Latino clubs and parties in New York and struck like a bomb. Together with emancipation, the LGBTQ community in America and became a global phenomenon. The whole world was on the dance floor, it was one big party. But in the early 1980s there was a rock -hard backlash. After the infamous anti-disco event Disco Demolition Night in Chicago, the election of Ronald Reagan and the AIDS Pandemie, Disco disappeared underground again to conquer the world years later as House Music.
In the performance Queen of Diso ICOOND, the story of this discoter pear is embodied by this discoorer. Exclusively on Saturday 22 March, prior to the show there is this inspiring introduction to this revolutionary and legendary discoper period.
