About event
Tax systems are too complex and unjust. In his stunning book 'The strongest shoulders', the young tax specialist Reinier Kooiman investigates the (rotten) foundation of our taxes and offers a radical new perspective on an honest world.
Taxes are the nerves of the state. But no matter how important, we hardly have an idea how the burdens of our society are distributed. Modern tax systems have become so complex that even the most experienced tax specialists have difficulty understanding it, let alone that we can assess whether it is fair. Reinier Kooiman proves that a democratic conversation about taxes does not have to be complicated. He takes the reader to the thirteenth-century Bologna, Perugia and Siena, where a fiscal revolution took place at the time and where fundamentally thought about what fair taxation is. The clear principles for fair taxation that were created at the time are more topical than ever, but forgotten over time and replaced by principles that are set out on a completely different read. Convincingly, Kooiman shows how the current tax colossus is at the basis of an increasingly unequal world. A fairer society is possible, and it starts with a radical new perspective on taxes.
Reinier Kooiman is a tax specialist. He works at the Stibbe law firm and is also a teacher and researcher at the University of Amsterdam. In 2016 he obtained his PhD on "the taxable fact in the inheritance tax". 'The strongest shoulders' is his first public book. It appeared in April 2025 at Uitlas Contact in Amsterdam.
