Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began composing the Requiem in D minor KV 626 in 1791, but due to his untimely death the work remained unfinished. Around the creation of the Requiem, there was a legend about a mysterious messenger who visited the composer at night with an order for a funeral mass, but did not reveal the identity of the composer. Regardless of how the generous commission came about, the order came from Count Franz von Walsegg-Stuppach, who intended the mass to honor his wife's memory. It is interesting that he himself had ambitions as a composer and liked to pass off other people's compositions as his own, while he originally had similar intentions with the Requiem. In that period, however, Mozart was busy with the creation of two operas: The Magic Flute and La clemeza di Tito, which he still managed to complete and submit to the staging process. The amount of work commitments gradually began to take its toll on the composer, whose health was already failing, and the series of debilitating fevers was exacerbated by an infection. Although Mozart also worked on the Requiem, as much as his strength allowed, he was no longer able to finish it, because his health deteriorated so much that he passed away on December 5, 1791. After the composer's death, his widow Constanze began working to complete the work. Otherwise, she would also have to return the deposit, which Mozart took over when the order was placed. She therefore turned to composers, mostly Mozart's pupils. First, she approached Joseph Eybler, who also started working on the piece, but for unknown reasons eventually decided to withdraw. After further attempts with other musicians, Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süßmayr took over the score and with the help of his studies and especially the use of Mozart's original scores, but also of Eybler's sketches, he completed the Requiem in the form in which we still know it today. It is music that combines majesty with an intimate statement and that opens the door to eternity.
