RESCHEDULED! Baron Munchausen Between The Lines
Event by: The Mad and Merry Men
Location: divadlo Apropo, Jánský vršek 8, Praha 1
About event
Who does not know them: The journeys of Baron Munchausen with the Sphinx and the carriage of the fairy queen Mab over the bridge between Africa and Europe, where he meets Don Quixote, of all people - no? Okay, how about the Baron slaughtering a hundred polar bears? Or the rescue of white slaves from the hands of their black oppressors?
The larger-than-life tales of the historical Baron Münchhausen’s alter-ego were inspired by one man, written down by another, and spun on by two - yet so many tales beyond the cannonball ride are now all but forgotten or underappreciated as literature.
But what and why did he tell his guests back then?
Why are the stories about the Baron among the most important books of the Age of Enlightenment? And how do they predate aviation, musical recordings, even the discovery of weightlessness by centuries?
In the stories, we find both a plea against rationality and a rallying call for pure reason - and how this effortlessly comes together in the adventures of Baron Münchhausen is conveyed by storyteller Gordon L. Schmitz, artistic director of the "Prage Horrortheater" and the "Mad and Merry Men". Besides his theatrical work he is also traveling throughout Europe as a Storyteller, works with the Münchhausen Museum Germany, even teaches the art of storytelling and has a total of over 400 performances as Storyteller under his belt. Now he is showing his first solo program in Prague – a mixture of storytelling and a journey through the history of the reception of the adventures – and promises surprising as well as unknown things about the most famous of all Storytellers.
