About event
🟡 Jana Boková has been moving between continents, cultures and homes all her life - and thus successfully escapes attempts to describe her life and work. If we want to capture something of it, we have to follow the movement of her films and her thoughts. A retrospective of Jana Boková's films is being held simultaneously at the Atlas cinema in cooperation with the Libri Prohibiti library.
At the time when she was already studying art history at the university in Prague, she decided not to return to the newly occupied country. This May, he is coming to Prague after many years. Although she shot the film Bye Bye Shanghai here in 2008, in which she dealt with the topic of exile, otherwise Prague is more of a foreign territory to her, even though she still has a few friends here. She spent more time than in Prague in Paris, London, Buenos Aires and also on numerous trips, on which she was not looking for new homes, but people and topics with whom she could communicate through the language of film and try to answer the basic questions of human existence.
Jana Boková graduated as a director from the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, and already her first films were characterized by a distinctive signature. She worked for the BBC at a time when she could apply her authorial approach. In the end, it is not so important whether we label her films as feature films or documentaries, because their common denominator is high: it is a search for essence, which is accompanied by a sense of humor, irony and paradox as the basic ingredients of human experience.
At Ponrep this year, Jana Boková will present only a narrow selection of her work, but her work will be available for future generations, as she recently donated media with her films to the National Film Archive.
