The Portuguese duo Rita Maria & Filipe Raposo will bring the Art of Song to Prague
By performing the program The Art Of Song, combining Portuguese tradition with contemporary improvised music, the phenomenal musicians will also celebrate Dia de Portugal, Portugal Day. The concert will take place on June 10 in the Great Hall of Prague's New Town Hall.
Portuguese traditional music has deep authentic roots, but at the same time it is malleable, cosmopolitan, inspiring and open to development and fusion. Singer Rita Maria and pianist Filipe Raposo prove this with their work. After all, the subtitle of the album The Art Of Song, Vol. 1 (2020) is more than apt. It sounds like When Baroque Meets Jazz. The following album, The Art Of Song: Between Sacred And Profane (2023), also celebrates the fruitful crossing of borders, this time between sacred and secular music.
The duo Rita Maria and Filipe Raposo, in short, have found a completely distinctive, yet cohesive space between classical music, jazz and echoes of folk music. But that cohesion should not really be surprising, after all, music has a similar task at all times and in every place: "Through songs from different environments and with a different context, we wanted to emphasize the role of singing and its elemental power as a basic factor of socialization, passing on knowledge, accompanying the ritual activities of work and religious ceremonies," Filipe Raposo explained the concept. The duo first offered their vision on an album in 2018, namely the concert recording Live In Oslo (2018). Since then, it has further refined its unique musical language.
Singer and composer Rita Maria (*1984, Lisbon) spent part of her adult life between Portugal, the USA and Ecuador. She divides her musical passion between jazz improvisation, nostalgic fado, classics, world music and musical experiments.
Rita Maria studied lyrical singing at the National Conservatory in Lisbon. Then jazz singing at the Barreiro Jazz School, at the Porto College Of Music And Performing Arts and, thanks to a scholarship, at the prestigious Berklee College Of Music in Boston. She collaborated, for example, with the renowned American bandleader John Hollenbeck, with the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra or the Lisbon Hot Club Orchestra. In Ecuador, she sang with Orquesta Andina, but also with the rock band Sal y Mileto. She also performed in the world music band Stockholm Lisboa Project, with whom she recorded Janela (2016). She recorded other albums with artists such as Elias Meister, Yeray Jiménez, Nuno Costa and Afonso Pais.
Pianist and composer Filipe Raposo (*1979, Lisbon) is not unknown to our audience. He also won favor with a solo piano recital as part of the 21st annual International Jazz Piano Festival on November 23, 2016.
Filipe Raposo is a graduate of the National Conservatory in Lisbon. He then continued his education, this time in the field of jazz interpretation, at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. He received his diploma in composition from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. As a pianist, composer and author of orchestral arrangements, he then collaborated with many world orchestras and with musicians such as the Mozambican-Portuguese fada performer Amélia Muge, the legendary Portuguese singer José Mário Branco or the singer-songwriter Jorge Palma. He composes music for film and theatre. Last year he won the Malaga Film Festival award for the soundtrack to the Spanish film drama Lo que queda de ti directed by Gala Gracia. He is also the author of the opera As Cortes de Júpiter. He made his album debut in 2011 with the title First Falls, since then he has published nine albums as a soloist or bandmate.
It probably goes without saying that Dia de Portugal commemorates the death of the national poet Luís de Camões in 1580 and is a celebration of Portuguese culture and statehood. Portugal Day concerts have already become a nice tradition in the premises of the New Town Hall.
