About event
Musician (and historian) Roel Spanjers takes you on a musical tour through the exotic sounds and rhythms of New Orleans and to music from which he gets his inspiration (Southern Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Roots).
The American city of New Orleans, 'The Big Easy', is a real melting pot of cultures and is therefore the cradle of almost all American music. A real city for pianists too, and that's surprising: Spanjers is almost the only one in the Netherlands who has mastered the specific, rolling sound of New Orleans on piano. To achieve this, he looked around the South of the US, listened carefully and, moreover, played and toured with local heroes. In this solo performance with piano and singing, Roel talks about the musical and cultural significance of the city of New Orleans and his own sources of inspiration. Important songs and illustrious figures such as Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino and Dr. John will be highlighted.
Pianist, Hammond organist and singer Roel Spanjers has been active as a professional musician in the Dutch 'Roots' music world for many years. He played, recorded and toured with such diverse artists as: Luther Allison, Smokey Wilson, JW Roy, Terry Evans, Frédérique Spigt, Malford Milligan & The Southern Aces, Dayna Kurtz, Roscoe Chenier and Ricky Koole & Leo Blokhuis. In addition, he has been a keyboardist and permanent band member of NORMAL for many years, both live and in the studio. Spanjers is a session musician and free-lancer but also has his own band: Sunset Travelers. In 2006 he released the critically acclaimed solo album 'Birdcatcher'.
