The diatonic accordion wizard Roger Corrêa will visit Prague for the first time

The young virtuoso Roger Corrêa undoubtedly belongs to the great hopes of contemporary Brazilian music. He was able to create his own musical language by combining southern Brazilian folk traditions, jazz improvisation and classical sophistication. He and his quartet will perform in the Czech premiere on May 27, 2026 in the great hall of Prague's New Town Hall.

We could assume that Brazilian genres are popular and well-known in the world. The south of the country nevertheless hid unheard musical treasures, for example in the form of the music of the local "cowboys" couches. It was she who became the primary source of inspiration for Roger Corrêa. However, the famous diatonic accordion player did not stop at just taking over rhythms and motifs from the borders of the southernmost of the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and northern Argentina. As an original composer, Corrêa was able to create an authentic, living world jazz fusion based on the cultural heritage of his native region.

Of course, Roger did not have to acquire a deep insight into the musical traditions of the South Brazilian couch potatoes in any complicated way, but he absorbed it naturally from an early age. He was born in 1998 in the city of Guaíba on the shores of the lake of the same name. And since his father is a folk musician, Roger accompanied him playing at various local festivals and parties since he was a child. Together with his brother, he received basic musical training at home from the age of six. Already at the age of thirteen he was performing across the Rio Grande do Sul with a number of local bands playing couch music. He then completed a more systematic education within the social platform Fábrica de Gaiteiros, literally "Factory of Pipers", founded by musician Renato Borghetti. Within the community of musicians and makers of musical instruments, Roger's teacher was Fofa Nobre.

Roger himself took care of further expansion of his horizons when, thanks to jam sessions in Porto Aleger, he discovered another Brazilian genre of choro, including European and African influences. When Roger later moved to Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina at the age of nineteen, he devoted himself to this style with the bands there. And in addition to samba, from where it was only a step to the interest in Latin jazz and jazz improvisation. At the same time, he also became enthusiastic about the music of legendary Brazilian composers such as Tom Jobim, Jacob do Bandolim and Pixinguinha.

Roger's fame soon went beyond his native regions. In 2021, the promising accordionist released his debut album Sul em Aquarela, followed by another critically acclaimed Latino Ibérico in 2024. Roger Corrêa worked as a sideman with stars such as Paquito D'Rivera, Javier Colina, Luis Salinas, Renato Borghetti, Ronaldo do Bandolim and Yamandu Costa. He performed as a guest soloist with the Florianópolis Chamber Orchestra. On his own tours, in addition to South American countries, he also thrilled audiences in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Germany.

Roger Corrêa Quartet is completed by double bassist Tiê Pereira, pianist Edilson Forte and drummer Rodrogo Porciúncula. The concert will take place as part of the Jazz Meets World series.
