About event

Experience Rohini Devasher's exhibition at the Palais Populaire with us - she is "Artist of the Year"

Experience with us the fascinating works of the "Artist of the Year" 2024, awarded by Deutsche Bank: Rohini Devasher. The artist, who was born in India in 1978 and studied painting and graphics, lives in Delhi. In her multifaceted artistic work, she explores the interfaces between science, art and philosophy. For the first time, art expert Stephanie Rosenthal, director of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project, suggested three artists from whom the bank selected Rohini Devasher.

With the award “Artist:in of the Year” honors promising artists who have already created both artistically and socially relevant work that encompasses the two main focuses of the Deutsche Bank Collection: works on paper or Photography. Starting this year, artists will no longer be nominated by a three-person jury with international curators, but by a personality from the global art world on a two-year rotation.

Rohini Devasher dedicates her research-intensive practice to the border areas between science, art and philosophy. Her first solo exhibition in Germany, "Borrowed Light", is the result of her long-term exposure to astronomy, in in which light plays a central role.

The term “borrowed light” comes from architecture and describesreflected, “borrowed” light, for example comes from an adjacent room to illuminate an otherwise dark room - or the moonlight that originally comes from the sun.

At the center of the exhibition is Devasher's four-channel film “One Hundred Thousand Suns “ (2023)which explores the geometry of the Earth, Moon and Sun as well as the relationship between astronomical events and the civilizational history of each place. The film is based on over 100,000 images of the sun that researchers have documented over 120 years at the Kodaikanal observatory in southern India. Rohini Devasher shows how complex the processes of seeing can be and how thin the line is between knowledge and mystery.

Look forward to fascinating works by the young artist, including many new works - a special feature of the "Artist of of the Year" program is that the artists usually also create new works for presentation at the Palais Populaire .
