About event
Kerekesfilm and Filmtopia invite you to the premiere of the film THE YEAR OF THE WIDOW, directed by Veronika Lišková, which will take place on November 7, 2024 at 7:30 p.m., at the Bratislava Cinema Mladosť. After the screening, we invite you to a discussion with the filmmakers.
The film The Widow's Year tells a story about courage, hope and the strength to start over after the death of a life partner.
Interpreter Petra (Pavla Beretová) under the influence of a tragic event must come to terms with the fact that she has become a widow at the age of forty. She soon discovers that grief is not the only challenge she has to face. Worries about a teenage daughter (Julie Šoulcová) and pressure from a manipulative mother-in-law (Zuzana Kronerová) are added. There is also the bureaucratic machinery that comes to life with a person's death: mortgages, loans, rents, fees, endless probate proceedings. Step by step, Petra finds the courage for a new beginning among the ruins of her life. The full-length feature film The Year of the Widow, based on true events, is a fragile and moving study of the grieving process in our contemporary world. The screenplay was based on Zuzana Pokorná's diary, which was subsequently published by the Czech weekly Respekt with great reader response. The actress Pavla Beretová excels in the main role.
The film is the full-length feature debut of documentary filmmaker Veronika Lišková (Daniel's World, Visitors), who says about its subject: "We wanted the Widow's Year to bring a strong realistic a story from the present that will sensitively talk about things that our societies prefer not to think about. The story is not only about the loss of a life partner and grief, but mainly about a new beginning and the power to live your life alone. And also about the fact that it is necessary to find our own inner freedom and independence in order to be able to give it to our loved ones as well."
