The Groot Handelsgebouw is the symbol of the reconstruction of Rotterdam. Shortly after the Second World War it was designed to fill the void that the bombing of the city had left. The architects Huig Maaskant and Willem van Tijen were instructed to realize a building that could serve as a showpiece of the reconstruction. On 17 May 1947 the first pile was symbolically beaten, but the actual construction began in April 1948. When the building was festively opened by Queen Juliana on 3 June 1953, it was the largest building in the Netherlands.

With an impressive size of 220 meters long, 85 meters wide and 43 meters high -layer. The Groot Handelsgebouw has three Binnenhoven and a road of 1.5 kilometers that runs through the building in three levels. It offered entrepreneurs the opportunity to establish their warehouses, showrooms and offices in one central location - a unique concept at the time. The building was therefore praised as 'the symbol of bundled power and the indestructible trust in the growth power of Rotterdam'.

During the Heritage Day, a guide takes you on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 Septemeber 2025 behind the scenes of this reconstruction giant.
