~ About Abdelkader Benali ~

Abdelkader Benali is an author and television presenter of Moroccan descent. He has lived in the Netherlands since he was four. He writes columns, plays, poetry, stories and novels, many of which have been awarded, including the Libris Literature Prize. In 2020 he received the Golden Goose Feather for his contribution to the Dutch language.

~ About the Ru Paré Lecture ~

Henrica Maria Paré (1896-1972) is the namesake of our community. Under the name Ru Paré she was a painter and part of the pre-war artistic environment of The Hague. When deportations began during the Second World War, Paré stopped her work as a painter. She refused the mandatory membership of the Nederlandsche Kultuurkamer and spent her time looking for hiding places for Jewish children. Under her resistance name 'Aunt Zus' she saved a total of fifty-two Jewish children. Ru Paré was an example of self-evident commitment and active citizenship. The annual Ru Paré Lecture is in line with this. In this lecture, the life and work of Ru Maria Paré is a source of inspiration. However, we do not only want to reflect on the past, because the present time, with all its tensions and threats, also requires choices. Humanity is always at stake.

Previous Ru Paré Lectures were given by Anja Meulenbelt (2021), Christine Otten (2022) and Chaja Polak (2023).
