About event

Russia's attack on Ukraine, which violated international law, more than three years ago now had a long history with a hybrid war in Donbass and the annexation of Crimea in 2014. But it was only in February 2022 that Europe was permanently shaken. Germany has reacted with the diagnosis of a “turning point”: the illusion of international cooperation and peaceful rapprochement is over. The decisive re-expansion of military security and the adjustment to new warfare technologies have dominated the discussion ever since - with corresponding counter-reactions. This partially polarized logic determines debates within the church.

Against this background, the theologians Nicole Kunkel and Torsten Meireis have written The War between Russia and Ukraine. An Intercontintal Peace Ethical Conversation (Berlin/Boston: de Gruyter, 2025) published a volume on peace ethics in the global context of a multipolar world. The volume is based on two theses. Firstly: under the conditions of geopolitical multipolarity, challenges to peace ethics cannot only be reflected from a German or European perspective. What is needed is an interdisciplinary and ecumenical conversation between scientists not only from Europe, but also from Africa, the USA and Latin America. And secondly: Security must not only be thought of in military terms, but requires international cooperation appropriate to the changed geopolitical conditions.

Academy director Friederike Krippner - also co-author of the new EKD peace memorial - speaks with Nicole Kunkel and Torsten Meireis about these international perspectives and about the logic of rearmament from a peace ethics perspective. It will also address the questions of how international cooperation should be thought of and what contribution theology and the church can possibly make to this.

A cooperation between the Berlin Institute for Public Theology (BIPT) of the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Center for Interreligious Theology (CITRS) with the Evangelical Academy of Berlin.
