About event

Samhain – Saturday, November 1

Part of the European year wheel and precursor to Halloween and All Souls' Day is Samhain (pronounced Sauw-in), the time of year when we reflect on the transience of life. According to ancient tradition, the veil between the hereafter and the hereafter is thinnest during Samhain.

In the Church of Ruigoord, the interactive altar is once again prepared to honor your dear deceased(s). This year, artist and research installation performer Eva Bartels is involved in its creation. You can decide for yourself how you would add an addition to the altar, for example in the form of a candle, photo or other object.

Chef Bastiaan Lips naturally provides pumpkin soup and another appropriate seasonal delicacy.

Ruigoord maker Anita Janssen keeps Theo Kley's Association of Ancestor Worship alive through a special pilgrimage to the monument of Ancestor worship, the Triquetra made by Martijn Steinz, where a ritual performance will take place under her inspiring leadership around 7:19 PM. At 3 PM, Ruigoorder Jinny Thielsch will give a lecture in the Church about the last book by her husband, co-founder of the current Ruigoord, Gerben Hellinga. The title of the book is 'About death and more'. Because Gerben is ill and cannot be present, Jinny will read passages and share some of his own experiences: what does the Roman expression 'Memento Mori' (Remember to die) mean and how can we deal with the realization that we could die at any moment? What impact does this have on the quality of life?

For a contribution of 10 euros per person you can attend Jinny Thielsch's lecture.

The book will also be for sale for €20.00 instead of €21.50 (excl. shipping costs).

The Samhain Altar in the Church is open from 4 pm to 10 pm and is for all ages and is freely accessible, donations are welcome.
