About event

Although classical economics assumes that people are cold, selfish, and rational, many of us regularly donate our money, time, or property to charities and non-profit organizations. 💵

🤔 Why is it good to help? And what leads us to it? Are we motivated more by trying to help someone, or rather by the good feeling we get from donating or volunteering? How do other people's philanthropy affect us, and how does the information we have about philanthropic opportunities influence our behavior? When do we tend to help more and when less? And how can knowledge about human motives towards charity be used by non-profit organizations?

About the speaker:

Matej Lorko completed his doctoral studies in behavioral and experimental economics at Macquarie University in Sydney and currently works at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Economics in Bratislava and also at the Institute of Experimental Psychology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In his research, he focuses on the volunteering and donation market, but also on the fulfillment of tax obligations, and most recently on the fight against disinformation - for example, in connection with the war in Ukraine. He lectures on human thinking and decision-making, as well as how to discover typical patterns of human behavior. As a volunteer, he co-organizes the Discover Summer Academy for high school students. He is constantly thinking about how the world works and why people do what they do. He likes to question the status quo, experiment and suggest how to work better. He shares his thoughts on the website https://lorko.sk/.
