About event

Unprecedented and yet (almost) forgotten. The Jewish resistance in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp on October 22, 1942

Lecture and conversation:
Dr. Cornelia Shati-Geißler
Yad Vashem, Jerusalen

In view of their presumed murder, a group of eighteen Jews broke out of the isolation barracks in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp on October 22, 1942 and ran across the roll call area, which was densely occupied at the time, towards the main watchtower. Some were knocked down by the guards; contrary to expectations, no shots were fired. Instead, the camp management continued the planned, but surprising for the resistance, deportation of the Jewish camp inmates to Auschwitz. A total of 454 new arrivals from Sachsenhausen were registered there on October 25th, including the eighteen young men. Many of the deportees were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau in the first few days after their arrival. The rest were sent to Auschwitz-Monowitz for forced labor, but most did not survive. In her contribution, Cornelia Shati-Geißler introduces the protesting Jews and reconstructs the course of the resistance.
Based on the testimonies of those involved, which have so far received little attention in resistance research, she sheds light on the conditions of collective resistance, the motives of the participants and the reactions of other camp inmates.
Finally, we should ask how this Jewish resistance is remembered and interpreted to the present day.

Dr. Cornelia Shati-Geißler heads the research project on the deportations of Jews during the Holocaust ("Transports to Extinction") at the International Institute for Holocaust Research, Yad Vashem.
