About event

Ever heard of the Higgs boson, particle accelerators, or CERN and wanted to learn more? Or do you like to geek out on physics, engineering, medical advancements, big-ass machines, or the origin of the universe?

**Join fellow science-minded singles** for a Science Pub lecture on the Large Hadron Accelerator, the 18 mile underground ring of superconducting magnets that gets particles moving at nearly the speed of light... for science.

And if you have a **nerdy/science-y t-shirt** or something you'd want to wear for funsies or as a conversation starter, go for it! (This is totally optional, but Kristina and Brent will be rocking them.)

**Care to join us?**

* [Get your ticket ahead of time](https://tickets.omsi.edu/events/019a5ff2-1866-ebe2-6b01-52a2a8b6a03d) (the suggested donation is $8) before it potentially sells out.
* Let's meet up at OMSI at 5:45 so we can say hello before the doors to the theater open at 6, grab seats together, get a drink/snack, and chat a bit before the presentation starts.
* Find Kristina or Brent (we'll wear ridiculous crowns and a science-y shirt to make it easier) and introduce yourself.
* After the event, folks could go to a nearby bar/restaurant to socialize more.

**Wait, what is this Science Pub event?** This will be a casual lecture in the (very cool) Empirical Theater at OMSI. Here's the blurb for the event: "The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN outside Geneva, Switzerland, is the largest machine and scientific experiment ever built. In this talk, particle physicist Dr. Andrew Larkoski will guide you on an insider’s tour of the LHC, from the acceleration of billions of protons, to their collisions 40 million times a second along the 18 mile ring, to the detection of particles in detectors the size of the entire OMSI building. Along the way, we will meet the Higgs boson, the final piece of the Standard Model of particle physics discovered at the LHC in 2012, and see where scientists are searching to make the next discoveries." **Reminder:** Make sure to follow the **Community Rules** in this group's About section. These include no harassing or aggressive behavior, no touching anyone at an event without explicit verbal consent, and using your real name and photo in your Meetup profile. If anyone violates these rules or makes you feel uncomfortable, please let the event host (like Kristina) know or reach out to another group organizer (like Max, Kevin, Cory or Erin).

\*\**P.S. If anyone (who's been to a few of our events recently) would be interested in hosting an event in the PDX Single 30 & 40 Somethings group, please reach out to me/Kristina. I'm at maximum capacity for hosting, but I'd love to support more organizers posting more events :-)*
