Most of us rarely stop to think about the underlying assumptions from which our own work emerges: why we work, for whom, for what pay and what is the real meaning of our work. If we did, we might realize that we are often blind
to the systemic circumstances that shape our lives and thereby increase the burden on individuals. This system, subtly advertised as following your passion and love for what you do, often leads to overwork and unpaid work, trapping individuals in a vicious cycle of burnout
and unfulfilled promises.

The art world is no exception, where artists, curators, writers and producers often juggle
multiple roles, resources and deadlines in a relentless cycle. Many find themselves wearing multiple hats and straining to make ends meet. Despite the hardships, there is resilience. Artists persevere, constantly producing, exhibiting and networking to maintain visibility in an increasingly demanding industry. But at what cost? The five art projects exhibited at the Selling Out exhibition explore the working conditions in the art world and beyond, as well as issues of commodification.
