Seminár: Hungarian suburbs of Bratislava - Cross-border suburbanization around the Slovakian capital

We invite you to a seminar where Dniel Balizs from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics will present his research findings.

Rajka is a village in Northwest Hungary with a special geographical location: it is only 15 kilometres from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This municipality is an excellent example of the phenomenon of cross-border suburbanization which means the migration of the urban population from the city to the not-too-distant rural area even it is in another country. Rajka has less than 2,000 autochthon and – due to the migration from Bratislava – already 7,000-8,000 immigrant inhabitants. Many of the newcomers do not have Hungarian citizenship and only a few of them participate in the social life of Rajka. There are differences between the lifestyles of these two communities, so there is a gap between the “old Rajka” community and the newcomers despite of the fact that some of the immigrants’ mother tongue is Hungarian. Nowadays the new residents arrive in increasing numbers to the old part of Rajka to move into reconstructed old buildings as well. There are many streets with mixed population in this village. Besides social changes, this presentation is also focusing on the ethnic and residential ancestry of the immigrants showing new lingual and social patterns in Rajka. On the other hand, researching the specifics of the enormous changes of the architectural character of this municipality is also important element of the presentation.
