About event
One of the significant historical anniversaries that we commemorate in 2025 is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. The final act, known as the Helsinki Accords, represented the culmination of Cold War de-escalation policies. In addition to confirming the post-war borders in Europe, it also established the principles of relations between the signatory states, including the obligation to respect human rights. It is this area that has become a big challenge especially for the socialist states east of the Iron Curtain, including Czechoslovakia.
The National Memory Institute and the civil association Misia 89 are organizing the seminar "Human rights and Helsinki 1975 - impact and reflection today" on the occasion of this anniversary. The event will take place in the premises of the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia in Bratislava, on Palisades 29, on Tuesday, December 9, on the eve of International Human Rights Day.
The program of the seminar will offer lectures by our historians, which will be devoted to the historical background of the adoption of the Helsinki Agreements, their influence on the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and on Slovak political exile. Slovak diplomat Dušan Rozbora, who personally participated in the signing of the agreements in Helsinki in 1975 as a member of the Czechoslovak delegation, will speak as a guest.
In the discussion panel, representatives of civil society and memory institutions will analyze the role of teaching human rights in the educational process in Slovakia.
Realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic within the subsidy program for the enforcement, support and protection of human rights and freedoms and to prevent all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and other manifestations of intolerance. The Institute of National Remembrance is solely responsible for the content of this document.
Entrance to the event is free.
