Serenades and quartets
16. 10. 2025 / design factory Jarovce / 19:00
"The listener in the concert hall forgets his time and lives in the time of the composition."
— Bohuslav MARTINŮ
After performing at the Convergences dedicated to the work of Leoš Janáček, the Zemlinsky Quartet will return to Bratislava in October with the music of Bohuslav Martinů (1890 – 1959). The Czech composer is the author of seven string quartets composed between 1918 and 1947. The second and third quartets were created in the 1920s in Paris, where the composer came to study with Albert Roussel thanks to a scholarship. The introspectively tuned Second Quartet not only brought Martinů success in musical circles, but also cooperation with the prestigious publishing house Universal Edition Wien. The experimentally conceived Third Quartet was written by the composer for the Roth String Quartet, an American-based group specializing in contemporary music. The work premiered in 1932 in the USA. While Serenade no. 2 dates back to the Paris period, the Serenade for two clarinets and string trio was created during Bohuslav Martinů's tenure at Princeton University, where he taught composition.
