About event
The Aquilino Ribeiro Chair, in cooperation with Camões, I.P. and with the Faculties of Arts of Masaryk and Carolina Universities, is pleased to invite all interested parties to a literary session with Mário Lúcio Sousa.
The author will give two lectures dedicated to his literary and authorial work on June 15, 2026, on the occasion of his participation in the Respect Festival, where he will perform a musical performance on June 13, 2026 (Saturday).
About Mário Lúcio Sousa
Mário Lúcio Sousa is one of the most striking figures in contemporary culture in Cape Verde. Writer, composer, singer and former Minister of Culture of the country, his work combines literature, music and reflection on identity, memory and creoleity. As a musician, he was the founder of the group Simentera, contributing decisively to the renewal of Cape Verdean music.
Among his literary works, the novels "O Novíssimo Testament", "Biografia do Língua", "Vidas Paralelas" and "O Diabo Foi Meu Padeiro" stand out, texts that explore issues of Cape Verdean identity, language, insularity and cultural memory. In poetry and essayistic reflection, his writing is distinguished by its strong musical dimension and the dialogue between oral tradition and modernity.
