Setkání s Václavem Sokolem

Commented tour of the exhibition Abundance with its author, Václav Sokol.

Václav Sokol's universe is made up of simple images: rain falling on the landscape, a ship on the surface of the water, light penetrating the darkness, grapes of wine or a glass on the table. We know simple motifs from biblical stories and from our own lives. The old language of symbols, in which the whole world was once told, comes to life in the drawings.

Ancient metaphors connected with spiritual religious experience repeatedly became the language of revolt, an island of resistance in the twentieth century. Think of Karel Kryl's Madonna of Silent Pain, the sung sermons of Svatopluk Karásk, folk songs interpreted by Jaroslav Hutka or the poems of Ivan Martin Jirous.
