SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80 in concert
Wednesday December 4, 2024 // Trabendo [PARIS]

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti . He dedicated most of his life to preserving and expanding his father's political and musical legacy as leader of Fela's former band, Egypt 80.
Seun was born in early 1983. From the age of five, he became interested in his father's music, and at age nine he began opening for Fela's concerts, singing a handful of songs with Egypt 80 before his father took the stage. As a budding saxophonist and percussionist, he officially joined the band before the age of 12. When Fela died in 1997, Seun, in accordance with his father's wishes, took over as head of Egypt 80, which he has led ever since.
During his adolescence, Seun divided his time between the group and school, and also participates in African football. From the age of 18, he devoted himself full time to music. His shows are always a mixture of pieces from his father and his own compositions. Although Fela never performed some of his recorded works on stage, Seun felt it was important for these compositions to be heard and included them in his own repertoire.
Over time, Seun begins to add his own touch to the music, deeply exploring various African traditions to reflect the struggles and cultures of the continent. His first recording, "Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80", was initially released by WM Recordings in 2008, before being distributed by Mr. Bongo. While many outside Africa criticized the use of the name Egypt 80, critics praised its musical dynamism and improvisational fervor.
The same year, Mr. Bongo also released his series “Many Things”. Seun embarked on a world tour and performed to enthusiastic audiences in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Paris, London, Tokyo, and especially Lagos. In 2011, he recorded "From Africa with Fury: Rise" for Knitting Factory Records, a production co-produced with Brian Eno and John Reynolds. This production propelled him to the forefront; it landed on both the Billboard and international digital charts. Following this, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 began a relentless world tour, often performing concerts lasting several hours, where group improvisation was as important as composition. The music never strays from the overtly political aspect.
The young Kuti continues to assert that "Fela will always be number one", despite the fact that he modifies and transforms the afrobeat with its own growing and evolving musical signature. As the son of Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti carries the torch of infectious grooves and political songwriting.
On December 9, 2022, Seun Kuti releases a new EP titled "African Dreams". This EP, featuring Roots frontman and MC extraordinaire Black Thought, consists of three remixes of songs from 2018 Grammy nominee Seun Kuti & Egypt 80's "Black Times."
