About event
Afghanistan has been one of the main countries of origin for refugee children and young people in Germany for decades. With the Taliban coming to power again in 2021, the situation in the country has become dramatically worse, not least for children and young people. At the same time, Afghanistan is currently the focus in Germany in debates about a restrictive migration policy.
The federal government wants to end the federal admission program for particularly vulnerable people from Afghanistan. Deportation flights are publicly presented as political successes; the protection rates for asylum seekers from Afghanistan have recently fallen dramatically. The current report "They don't see us as people" from the children's aid organization Terre des Hommes therefore focuses on a question that is usually neglected in public perception: What are the reasons that motivate children and young people to flee Afghanistan?
Forced recruitment or the threat of marriage to a Talib: The report makes the reasons for flight clear. The presentation of the publication will be followed by a panel discussion with the authors and guests from journalism, culture and civil society. At the subsequent reception with Afghan finger food there is an opportunity for exchange and networking. Pictures by Afghan women artists will also be shown, which are part of the exhibition Hope in Darkness by Terre des Hommes.
