"Sing um dein Leben, Grieche" Lebensmelodien: Musik verfolgter jüdischer Musikerinnen und Musiker
"Sing for your life, Greek" melodies of life: music by persecuted Jewish musicians
Event by: Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin
Location: Apostel-Paulus-Kirchengemeinde, Grunewaldstraße 77A, Berlin - Bezirk Tempelhof-Schöneberg
About event
In the Nazi ghettos and in the face of persecution and death, Jewish musicians composed pieces of music between 1933 and 1945 that were largely forgotten. This concert will feature works that were sung by Spanish, Italian and Greek Jews during the Shoah. You will also hear the life stories of those who created them. In addition to the classic ensemble of Lebensmelodien, the choir of the Landesmusikgymnasium Rheinland-Pfalz takes part.
With this year's concert on November 9th, the Lebensmelodien are taking a new musical direction, as sounds and melodies from southern Europe will be heard. The different functions and effects of these pieces of music become clear in the accompanying readings of biographical reports. It becomes clear that the foreign language texts made it possible to use the musical works to convey information and emotions without attracting the attention of the National Socialists. Sometimes music even came to the rescue. For example, for a Jew from Corfu, whose beautiful singing saved his and others' lives several times.
Only Ben Shalom (clarinet and artistic direction), Michael Cohen-Weissert (piano and music arrangement), Luke Hsu (violin), Francesca Zappa (viola), Mischa Meyer (cello) and Peter Riegelbauer (double bass) play. The biographical reports will be read out by actor and voice actor Gunter Schos.
Like all Lebensmelodien concerts, the event is free. However, registration is required to participate.
Please be at the Apostle Paul's Church at least 30 minutes before the start of the concert and allow time for security checks upon entry.
The Melodies of Life are organized by the interreligious network Grenzgangen. In addition to the Evangelical Academy in Berlin, it also includes the Alhambra Society e.V., the Berlin Missionswerk, the Evangelical Church District Tempelhof-Schöneberg and the Apostle Paul Church Community Berlin-Schöneberg. The concert is organized in collaboration with the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office.
