Before you hire Steven Spielberg began playing with Transformers, Michael Bay earned a reputation as a master director in the action genre thanks to his collaboration with the production genius Jerry Bruckheimer.
The remixed plot, where a group of soldiers occupy Alcatraz and threaten to fire rockets with deadly gas, so a commando accompanied by an ex-convict and a nerdy biochemist must infiltrate the iconic island near San Francisco, provides the perfect excuse for a whole series of opulent action situations. The acting engagement of character actors Sean Connery, Ed Harris and Nicolas Cage, who was still seriously ill at the time, adds grace and dignity to everything.
The rock was released at the time in the USA by the prestigious art label Criterion Collection. He asserted that despite the elitist bias or the problematic nature of Bay's personal expressions, we cannot deny this director's originality and contribution to cinematography. While some see him as the personified evil of the superficiality of popcorn cinema, others call him an avant-garde auteur who uses experimental editing techniques and elevates the blockbuster to the level of modern spectacular opera. Although many other creators try to copy from him, no one else has such a formal feeling for pomp and spectacle.
