About event

Lucas Abela
Initially classed as a turntablist, Lucas Abela’s work has rarely resembled anything in the field, early feats saw him stab vinyl with Kruger style stylus gloves, bound on electro acoustic trampolines, drag race the pope across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, perform deaf defying duet duels with amplified samurai swords, hospitalised by high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors, record chance John Peel sessions with the Flaming Lips, get pole position on Otomo Yoshihides' Ground Zero remix compilation; 'Consummation' by destroying the disc with amplified skewers rather than bothering to sampling it.
Today these turntable roots have become almost unrecognisable, evolving into his infamous glass instrument, the shards being nothing more than a giant diamond tipped stylus vibrated vocally. He has been perfecting the instrument since it's invention in 2003, performing internationally as Justice Yeldham.

After a long performance career his ideas have morphed into participatory sound installations, or more accurately large-scale instruments for musical play devised to switch roles between audience and performer in line with his philosophy that experimental music is more rewarding to play than to observe.

Christopher Cox
is a veteran trombonist, composer, and improviser, who has worked with many of the world’s most celebrated free jazz explorers. Born and raised in Northern California, he was fortunate to be a young man during the 1990s Bay Area free jazz Renaissance. He has toured and performed with Marco Eneidi, Glenn Spearman, Jason Robinson, Billy Bang, Cecil Taylor, political hip-hop/jazz group Junkyard Empire, and famed poet Amiri Baraka.
His trombone sound is dark and expansive, while also having the ability to bring out the faintest frequencies the trombone has to offer, experimenting with split tones, multiphonics, and his own technique of manipulating the overtone series with a mix of lip movements, something he refers to as lip-phonics. His tone is bold and round, not unlike a bass trombonist in an orchestra. Add to all of this a healthy dose of electronics (see the groups Sapient Paradox and Cosmic Cluster) via bass and guitar effects pedals, and you have anything from a wall of sound to a faint whisper that echoes for minutes. His live performances frequently move from sparse and meditative ambient drones to psychedelic free jazz. What holds the entire thing together is a fierce dedication to tone, sound, and melody. He rarely relies on pure emotion when he plays.
