The hidden curriculum of perseverance: Psychosocial stressors in the environment of art colleges

Barbora Procházková

Deteriorating mental health of university students represents an important social topic that in recent years has opened up a wider debate about the conditions of study, power relations and the institutional responsibility of universities. At the same time, the environment of art education forms a specific context, which has so far been rather on the fringes of research interest. This contribution focuses on psychosocial stressors in the environment of Czech art education and examines how institutional arrangements, organizational conditions and cultural norms shape students' experiences. The contribution is based on research based on 30 interviews with students of visual, audiovisual and performance fields from six Czech universities. The analysis identified institutional, organizational and interpersonal stressors associated with standards of total commitment, unclear assessment criteria, high time-consuming study or blurred boundaries between teachers and students. The findings show that these mechanisms create a so-called "hidden curriculum of perseverance", through which overload, uncertainty and self-sacrifice are normalized as a natural part of the identity formation of the future artist. The paper thus opens up questions related to the form of study culture and the psychosocial conditions of contemporary art education.

Barbora Procházková is a doctoral student in the field of sociology at the Institute of Sociological Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University. At the same time, she works as a lecturer at the Department of Political Science and International Relations of CEVRO University.

The lecture will be held in Czech and no registration is required.
