About event
The main goal of the project - SLAM to the benches - is to bring the principles of the SLAM POETRY genre to Slovak art and non-art schools and to create a space for students to create and cultivate skills associated with articulating their own topics. It is therefore about developing the skills of authorial text creation (formulating one's own opinions, thoughts, themes through an artistic text) and cultivating self-confidence/self-presentation, which is currently essential for applying oneself or functioning in society.
The duration of the workshop is variable, it is ideal to hold a three-hour workshop two days in a row, while the first day is for the students will introduce the Slam Poetry genre as such and start working on own author's texts, and the second day will mainly work with performance and voice techniques, fight against stage fright or improvisation exercises. The best participants of the workshop will be able to perform at the slam poetry exhibition, which will take place on October 23 in Martin's Barmuseu.
The lecturer for your school will be Tomáš Straka, the founder of contemporary slam in Slovakia. Straka has been teaching slam poetry since 2017, and his workshops have helped to find dozens of talents in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, who constantly shape slam and literary life in both countries. He is the author of six books and co-author of several dance and theater productions. He was a member of Andrea Petrovič's team, which received the Dosky prize for exceptional dance performances in 2023 for the NDKE ballet called EXTÁZA and the main organizer of the European Slam Poetry Championship in 2024. In 2018, he participated in the creation of the slam production Bridging Barriers, where he was mentored by the founder of the genre, Marc Smith.
