The final evening of the Navalis Midsummer festivities (May 14-16, 2026) will belong to prayer, light and the living memory of St. John of Nepomuck.
It is Malá Strana and the Charles Bridge area where a large part of his story took place. As Vicar General of the Archbishop of Prague, Jan faithfully defended the rights of the Church and the conscience of the confessor. In 1393, after torture, he was thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava.
That is why it is here, in the heart of Prague, that Navalis culminates every year with a solemn procession to the place of his martyrdom.
Evening program – May 16, 2026
🕕 18:00 – Solemn Vespers in the Church of St. Thomas
🕯️ Then follows a procession to the Charles Bridge
From the silence of prayer, we go out into the streets.
From the ancient temple to the river.
From Vespers to the testimony of faith.
⛪ Church of St. Thomas
This temple belongs to the oldest spiritual places of Malá Strana. In 1285, an Augustinian monastery was founded here next to the existing church of St. Tomas. The Gothic reconstruction culminated in the ceremonial consecration on April 17, 1379. After further alterations, the church was consecrated again on December 29, 1593 and underwent its last major renovation in 1960–1971.
For centuries, it has been a place of prayer, spiritual depth and continuity of faith in the very heart of Prague. It is a symbol that faith survives the changes of time - just like the legacy of St. Jan Nepomucký.
