The Brooklyn sound that shaped the nineties will return to Prague at the end of May. As part of the Boombox concert series, the legendary duo Smif-N-Wessun, one of the most prominent formations around the Boot Camp Clik collective, will perform on the Cargo Gallery ship on 5/31. The evening on the Smíchov embankment will be completed by exclusive support in the form of the Californian duo Blu & Exile.
Smif-N-Wessun, the brainchild of Tek and Steele, made hip hop history with their 1995 debut, Dah Shinin'. Raw production, street poetics and unmistakable Brooklyn slang made them the voice of a generation and an essential building block of the East Coast sound. Their work has always stood for authenticity - no posturing, no compromises - and that's why they've maintained respect over the decades. In the following years, they followed up with records like The Rude Awakening or collaborations with producer 9th Wonder, which brought their classic signature to the present without losing any of their original power.
Their concerts are not just a nostalgic ride, but living proof that boom bap still has something to say. The audience is waiting for a return to the era when the beats were hard and the stories were even harder - but also the energy that works here and now.
The special guest of the evening will be Blu & Exile, a pair that won cult status immediately with their debut Below the Heavens. Rapper Blu and producer Exile brought to the scene a more sensitive, introspective position of hip hop based on powerful lyrics and soulful samples. Their music is personal, layered and accessible at the same time – a combination that has earned them a devoted audience around the world. Live, they can create an atmosphere that is as intense as a club and almost meditative.
The venue itself adds another dimension to the event. Cargo Gallery, anchored on the Smíchov embankment, is one of the most impressive concert venues in Prague. The combination of close contact with the audience, an open space and a view of the river creates an ideal backdrop for an evening that connects the classics with current happenings on the scene.
Boombox thus once again confirms that it brings names to Prague that have something to say - regardless of the time in which they were created. The end of May will belong to hip hop in its purest form.
