From the afterword to Šnyt:
Šnyt is indefinite measure. Dimension mythical, unclear and forbidden. From Karel Čapek: Šnyt, as is known, belongs to hollow measures; it is not a pint or a small beer, but only an approximate measure.
Measure, not measure, peace.
The anthology is being completed during the war in which Ukraine is fighting
with Russian invasion troops.
There is a war.
A house stands in the middle of wide fields, / a pub on the ground floor, a barracks behind it. / There, a soldier drunk after his seventh beer / begins to tell about love.
Jiří Mahen's poem Old song from the collection Plamínky (Journal of progressive studentship, 1907) haunts the encounter of a drunken soldier with women, this is a crackling reaction from time immemorial. At the barracks on the outskirts of the city and in the vortex of the front. Alcohol multiplies hatred, lust darkens the head. And witnesses of massacres, scorched earth and sexual violence in Avdijivka, Buch, Irpina, Mariupol, Bakhmut or elsewhere in Ukraine also often speak of the terror of drunken attackers. pint.
Beer here! / You can barely see through the smoke. / We were all poor once. / Sell yourself, girl, to the rich!
The quoted verses are not included in the Šnyt anthology, although Mahen calculates the bill accurately in them. Seven beers.
