About event

The lecture is devoted to a most curious subject that only a few people know about - the emergence of modern art on the African continent.

African art developed according to completely different principles and laws than European art. Initially it was practical and inseparable from magic. There was no Antiquity or Renaissance in it, and until the middle of the 20th century, neither painting, nor engraving, nor any other author's genre existed in Africa.

In the 20th century, the laconicism and expression of traditional African art had a huge influence on Picasso and Modigliani. The new fashion forced Europeans to go to the colonies in search of masters whose works would remind the public of European modernists. There they met Africans who were ready to create a new world from scratch - in painting, sculpture, literature and architecture, while the newcomers, on the contrary, turned into priests of secret societies and builders of sacred groves.

Lecturer: Meir Itkin (Israel), curator, curator of the Haifa Museum of Art, writer and journalist.
