About event
The history of falconry represents an important chapter of Central European cultural, sports and social history. Sokolovne were not only gymnasiums, but also symbols of civic involvement, national awareness, education and modern lifestyle. They were created as centers of community life where sport, culture, education and social events met.
The Sokol movement was founded in 1862 in Prague thanks to Miroslav Tyrš (named Tyršovo nábrežie) and Jindřich Fügner. Their goal was to create a modern physical education movement that would develop physical fitness, discipline, moral values and patriotic feelings.
The slogan "In a healthy body, a healthy spirit" was associated with the idea of harmonious human development in the Sokol environment.
Sokol developed more significantly in the territory of Slovakia after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918.
New units were formed in the cities, which sought to build their own buildings. One of the most important became Sokolovňa in Bratislava, today the largest Sokol gymnasium in Slovakia.
The period of greatest expansion of the Sokol movement ended after the breakup of Czechoslovakia and the declaration of the so-called of the Slovak State in March 1939. Shortly afterwards, the Bratislava falconry was taken over by the Hlinka Guard, who modified it and used it for their own needs...
Please accept our invitation to a guided tour of the premises of the falconry, which is one of the favorite locations of filmmakers thanks to its authentically preserved atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century.
