Opening concert - choir concert with reading -

Sonat Vox and Angela Winkler

Room conception: Anna Mesniankina

This concert by the male voice ensemble Sonat Vox commemorates the victims of the Holocaust and focuses on works that make hope, faith and memory audible in times of greatest darkness. Angela Winkler's interpretation of the Sintessa monologue from THE WHEEL OF HAPPINESS by Werner Fritsch merges in a special way with the musical atmosphere of the concert and thus expands the sound space of memory with a haunting, human voice.

About Sonat Vox:

Founded in 2015 by Justus Merkel, Sonat Vox has developed into one of the leading choirs in Germany. Many of the singers received their training from the Windsbach Boys' Choir. In addition to the men's and chamber choir, the ensemble consists of an in-house chamber orchestra. Sonat Vox has won multiple awards, including first prize at the 2018 German Choir Competition in Freiburg and the International ICCC, and offers expressive interpretations of classical music literature.

About the reading:

Angela Winkler gives Sintessa's voice presence and depth - sometimes tender, sometimes eruptive. Their interpretation merges in a special way with the musical atmosphere of the concert and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, focusing on works that make hope, faith and memory audible in times of greatest darkness. About the author:

Werner Fritsch, born in Waldsassen/Upper Palatinate in 1960, published his highly acclaimed novel Cherubim in 1987. He wrote numerous plays and monologues, including Quarry, Meat Grinder, Hydra War, Bach, Wondreber Dance of Death, Sense, Beyond, Nico, Shinx of Ice and The Wheel of Happiness. The film book Faust Sonnengesang IV (Molokoplusrecords) was most recently published in 2025.

About the interpreter:

Angela Winkler, born in Templin in 1944, is an internationally renowned actress who worked at the Burgtheater, Berliner Ensemble and worldwide with directors such as Peter Zadek and Robert Wilson. She had her breakthrough in film in 1975 with The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, followed by roles in The Tin Drum, Benny's Video, The Clouds of Sils Maria and Suspiria. She is also active as a singer and released the album I love you, I can't say in 2011. During the recording of Werner Fritsch's radio play MIXING MEMORY & DESIRE II, he asked Angela if she would like to read his monologue of a "Roma grandma" who survived four years in Auschwitz as part of Andreas Lechner's series CULTURE AGAINST FORGETTING, and gave her the book with the text. Fritsch emphasizes the special importance of honoring this aspect - Auschwitz, Sinti and Roma - in the series.
