Francesca Caccini, "La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina"
The opera "La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina" by Francesca Caccini was performed in Florence during the carnival season of 1625; it is the earliest known stage work by a woman. The play revolves around the sorceress Alcina and her dramatic love for the knight Ruggiero. Katharina Bäuml and Mirella Weingarten brought the work to the stage in a semi-staged version at the SPAM Festival 2025 on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the premiere. Due to its great success, there is a revised revival of this production at SPAM light.
