Johann Sebastian Bach, Musical Offering BWV 1079
During his visit to Frederick II in 1747, Johann Sebastian Bach was asked by the regent to improvise on a theme he had posed. Bach complied with this request and later dedicated an entire collection of compositions to the king with various works on his theme - the "Musical Sacrifice". This bow to the Prussian king was politically explosive, as Bach thereby snubbed his own sovereign, the Elector of Saxony. The musical parts of the work, played by the Ensemble Continuum, alternate with texts in which Bach's Prussian performance is reflected from the perspective of his wife Anna Magdalena. Franziska Troegner, who herself played Anna Magdalena in the four-part series »Johann Sebastian Bach« in 1985, is reading it.
